KUNOS Simulazioni’s latest release, Assetto Corsa EVO, certainly elicits mixed feelings. In the race of multiplatform driving simulations, it vies for the pole position. With a vast array of cars and tracks traversing years of motoring history, it impressively redefines the realism of this genre. However, one must question if this added layer of authenticity comes with compromises that may affect the game’s reputation.

Overall Impression

The first visual and gaming impressions are indeed stunning. 505 Games, the publisher emblazons its signature panache by offering a visually rich gaming environment. The attention to detail, both aesthetically and mechanically, puts Assetto Corsa EVO in a league with Project Cars and Gran Turismo. Swanky dashboards, meticulously detailed interiors, and impressive landscapes create an atmospheric racing experience.

Gameplay Mechanics

Gameplay mechanics have been the realm where KUNOS Simulazioni traditionally shines, and this release continues this trend, with one glaring exception. Assetto Corsa EVO’s cars and tracks feel responsive and authentic, making every race an exhilarating challenge. However, its contentious decision to require always-online functionality, even in single-player mode, has put a significant roadblock in the player experience, as reported by numerous users. This choice significantly limits the game’s accessibility and overall enjoyment for those with unstable or non-existent internet connections. Consequently, players cannot access a significant part of the game’s car roster sans internet. It’s a gamble that seems to ignore the pitfalls of previous games like Gran Turismo 7 and The Crew 1, which faced harsh criticism for similar moves.

Story and Characters

Onto the story and characters, this is a tricky terrain, as driving simulations inherently lack the narrative-driven aspects of their RPG or action-adventure counterparts. Still, each car and track carries its piece of motoring history, which does add character to the in-game experience. However, being unable to dip into the car roster due to the online-only stipulation is a miss. KUNOS might need to accelerate efforts to rectify this to maximize player enjoyment further.

Sound and Music

On the audio-visual front, the game boasts a robust soundscape that rivals its stunning visuals. The rev of engines, squeal of tires, and the immersive background track greatly enhance the overall gameplay experience. However, it should be noted, the voice acting element is not integral to the game. Thus it doesn’t significantly contribute to or detract from the overall experience.

Difficulty and Replayability

As for difficulty and replayability, the game scores phenomenally. Confounding weather conditions, challenging tracks, and realistic handling and physics extend a hefty challenge to even the most experienced players. If KUNOS can navigate past the always-online roadblock, Assetto Corsa EVO could have stellar replayability, thanks to its vast selection of cars and tracks.

Conclusion

In a late-night race towards the finish line, I would give Assetto Corsa EVO a 3.5-star rating out of 5. It could easily take pole position if it fixes its connectivity demands, ultimately offering an enhanced and accessible player experience. Plotting a smoother course of action, specifically steering from always-online functionality, may help Assetto Corsa EVO inch towards its potential as a leading titan in the realm of driving simulations. Until then, it remains a promising yet limited spin in the genre. Despite the obstacles, one hopes the game’s graphics and motoring history can triumph over its shortcomings, retaining its appeal to the racing simulation community.
