Kicking off, we’re talking about Super Hydorah, a retro-style shoot’ em up game developed by Locomalito and published by Abylight Studios. Considering the user reviews such as the comparison to Operation SpaceHog, this game has quite the positive buzz around it, particularly its refined difficulty and comprehensive level of detail. Definitely sounds like a game for the dedicated.
Absolutely, ProX. The detail in Super Hydorah is exhaustive. I’m impressed particularly with how the routes and levels are laid out. With 21 levels nested into 35 sublevels, this non-linear design feels like a throwback to classic shoot-em-ups, allowing for an explorative and full-bodied gaming experience.

Yeah, not to break in but I appreciate the game for its consistent action. The pace is just constant, which really suits all us speedrunners out there. But besides that, the power-ups and weapon selection elements do add a welcome variance which stops the game from getting too repetitive.
Certainly! The gameplay mechanic certainly doesn’t fall flat. The CRT Monitor effect, for example, just adds this authentic retro feel. But the main attraction for an adventuring soul like me has to be the bio-mechanical creatures, the Meroptians. It’s an absolute joy to explore the Omios star fighting them!
And let’s not forget the narrative here. Simple, yet engaging. An evil force, Meroptians, have forced an invasion over the Omios star. You’re the skilled pilot tasked with the survival of your galaxy. This pulls you in and keeps you invested.
The game might not have a huge character development facet, but the player/avatar’s journey through the game provides enough narrative engagement. And in terms of challenge, I can testify, it is “damn hard to master,” just as their Steam description attests!
challenging bosses
I think that’s where the replay value comes in. The game’s design encourages replayability in the form of secrets, multiple endings, achievements, and a rank system. Each playthrough gives you a chance to perfect your strategies and find new routes to use for the best speedrun times.
Visually, the game’s a treat! The artistic style is cohesive and the colorful parallax backgrounds add depth. Plus, the enemies are unique per level, giving you a real sense that you’re journeying through a universe. It’s a bit of a nostalgic trip paired with a fresh gaming experience.
Let’s not forget the original soundtrack with over 60 tracks. The sound design fits well with the gameplay, enhancing the tension and thrill. And, how the sound mimics retro arcade games with laser blasts and explosive sound effects, is simply nicely mixed and balanced.
All of this sets Super Hydorah apart from the many shoot ’em ups out there. The game’s unique features give it a certain replayability which many modern games often lack.

In terms of improvements for the future, I’d personally like to see more character development or backstory. I also wouldn’t mind some additional side quests or puzzles that contribute to the main story.
And perhaps some more player customization options. That could add a personal touch to our adventures.
As for the future, I’m looking forward to new projects from the Locomalito-Abylight team. Whether it’s Super Hydorah’s sequel or a unique venture, it would be exciting to see how they build upon their existing strengths.
Definitely! More games designed with speedrunners in mind would be great. And hey, who wouldn’t love to see Super Hydorah 2?
I second that! Locomalito and Abylight have brought a gem to the table with Super Hydorah. I can’t wait to see what they have in store next.
Might be an arcade-inspired shooter next, who knows? But until then, Super Hydorah promises plenty of battles, exploration, and epic soundtracks that will keep us hooked.
