Hey everyone, I hope you’ve had your fill of chaos and power with Phenomic’s SpellForce – Platinum Edition released by THQ Nordic. I think we can all agree on the overall ‘Very Positive’ Steam reviews!
Indeed, the reviews highlight the game’s unique blend of RPG and RTS. And as one reviewer pointed out, it does have a high degree of innovation in terms of game design which I certainly relished as I explored every inch and collected all the enchanted items. It’s the kind of expansive world I love sinking my teeth into.
I agree. However, some reviewers did critique the game as being ‘glacial’. Sure, the pace could be slow at times, especially given the character’s slow movement and large map. Cheat Engine’s turbo mode was a popular fix, but I hope in future versions the pace could be adjusted without such needs.
Looking from my perspective, where I focus on gameplay mechanics, Phenomic has done an astounding job. The ‘Click’n’Fight’ control element provides new tactical possibilities in the battle. But selecting and targeting can be tricky. I’d agree with the reviewers – improving the controls could create more seamless combat experiences.
Personally, that sense of stepping into ancient looming prophecies and unfolding epic narratives of immortality and power kept me hooked. I believe the developers accomplished a deep level of world-building here, which surely added to the story’s engagement.
Yes, the narratives about the Rune Warrior and enslaved gods, they’ve created an entire universe that keeps you invested. Whether you’re investing in the slow-paced full campaign or coming back for individual Avatar abilities in free-play!
Let’s talk visuals. I think they’ve done fairly well considering SpellForce’s release in 2009. However, some design choices do show its age. The graphics are admittedly polygonal and show room for improvement.
Despite that, as one reviewer noted, creature models remained distinct even from a zoomed-out view. For the style and period, the animations still do their job in enhancing the atmosphere and player immersion.
I found the audio design alluring. The soundtrack was so immersive, it totally added to the mood of the game.
The characters, Frog the Elve Queen or the Rune Warrior, they make it easy to identify with your avatar. The RPG elements in developing their skills are spot-on, making every interaction within the game dynamic and crucial.
As for challenge level, some reviewers found it slightly challenging in small RPG mode fights. Yet, achieving a fully upgraded base and a full army makes combat seem like a cakewalk. So, balancing the difficulty could be further improved to raise the bar for experienced gamers.
Well, replay value is where this game shines. With 6 different races, various enemies, spells, and objects to explore, it offers an extremely high replayability factor. And the freedom in Avatar abilities selection? That’s the cherry on top!
I hope to see more innovative and fine-tuned iterations from Phenomic and would love to see THQ Nordic continue to support titles like SpellForce that offer an engaging blend of RTS and RPG elements. I’m certain, with some improvements, a potential sequel could be a big hit.
Absolutely, I’m eager for more in-depth world-building, extensive collectibles, and side quests in the next SpellForce. It’s the expansive gaming experience that gamers like me look forward to.
I’m excited about the possibilities of deepening the gameplay mechanics and controls. New battle tactics, character-specific abilities and a more seamless interaction experience, could take the SpellForce series to new heights.
How about more swift and direct controls, less ‘glacial’ pacing? Maybe new modes catered to speedrunners like me. Enhanced graphics and smoother animations are also on my wish list for any future SpellForce games.
Time will tell, fellow gamers. For now, let’s catch back into immortality and chaos of SpellForce – The Platinum Edition. Happy gaming!
