Well everyone, Neon Ships: The Type’em Up Shooter by Sensen Games is quite a unique mashup of a shooting and typing game, isn’t it?
Definitely! It seems tailor-made for thrill-seekers like me. I love that the gameplay’s pace is directly tied to how quickly and accurately you type. This is one game where knuckle speed literally counts!
And the game offers that completionist satisfaction as well. The developers included 17 achievements and a leaderboard, which gives those of us with a completionist spirit a lot of content to work through. Though as one of the user reviewers on Steam pointed out, achieving a perfect run is going to be quite a challenge.
Speaking of challenges, I love how the game uses pop culture phrases for typing! Neon Ships not only tests typing skills, it also becomes a fun trivia game. However, I did notice a repetition of the phrases. They could do with a wider range of quotes for more depth.
Agreed, but before we get into that, let’s focus on the gameplay mechanics. Dodging bullets while typing requires a great deal of concentration and coordination. Typing the phrases quickly enough exposes the enemies to your lethal laser attack, which keeps the stakes high and the tension real.
Fast-paced is my middle name! But I did notice some user reviews mentioning an annoying issue during fullscreen mode where the game keeps re-adjusting resolution. Dealing with flickering screens is not fun, Sensen Games needs to look into that.
typing and dodging bullets
That’s certainly an issue to address. As for the narrative, there’s not much. It’s more about the gameplay. You’re thrown into immediate action with no backstory or in-depth world-building elements making it a purely action-driven game.
True. And in terms of visuals, it’s got that charming retro style — it brings back the old school shoot’em up game vibes which we all love. The simplistic yet effective art style definitely suits the overall atmosphere of the game.
Absolutely, and the audio complements this. The music keeps your adrenaline pumping, setting the stage for the exhilarating typing and dodging action. There’s no voice acting involved, though.
On character development, I’d say the emphasis is more on the player’s ship, rather than any individual character. The ship’s abilities and upgrades are tied to the player’s typing speed which is a fresh take.
The game does offer a genuine challenge. The bullet-dense environment, multiple attack patterns, and power management provide a good mix of twitch-skills and strategy. It’s perfect for those who love a challenge.
Agreed. But replay value could be enhanced with more varied phrases for typing and different difficulty levels. As well as that, implementing upgrades or ship customization could add to the replay value and make each run feel unique.
vivid colors, tons of bullets
Well those are all valid points. Compared to classic games from the shoot’em up genre, Neon Ships stands out due to its innovative typing mechanic. But there’s still room for improvement, such as in resolution stability, and expanding the variety of phrases used for typing.
I second that. I understand it’s Sensen Games’ first take on this genre fusion, and I am looking forward to seeing how they will evolve these mechanics in the future.
Same here. Despite a few issues, Neon Ships: The Type’em Up Shooter is indeed a promising game. Sensen Games has put forward a unique take on the shoot’em up genre that offers a lot potential for growth.
Here’s hoping Sensen Games continues to experiment with and refine this gameplay fusion. I’m certainly excited to see what they come up with next!
